Every one of these worked. I have spent nineteen years telling recruits not to try most of what is on this page, and every so often one of them does it anyway and comes home. I am obliged to write those ones down.

So read them. Bravery is not a plan and I will not pretend otherwise, but the builders anybody remembers are the ones who went and found out. A column that had no business surviving will teach you more than one that was never in trouble, provided you can tell which part was the idea and which part was the other fellow having a bad afternoon. Their owners know the difference. That is why the reasoning is printed underneath.
